How To Hand Pump Water From A Deep Well
Traditional well water hand pumps were designed to pump water out of shallow wells less than about 25ft deep. These shallow well pumps have the piston above ground, so they must pull the water up fromhttps://www.bisonpumps.com/support/resources/lift-pump/ below ground. Water can't be sucked up more than about 30 ft because it's the maximum height of water you can pull with a vacuum (at which point the water will start to boil). That's why all well pumps that go deeper than about 25ft have to be submersible and push the water up. Pushing the water up from great depths requires a strong pump because the pressure increases greatly.
The deep well hand pumps must also push the water up. They work by connecting a rod from the handle to the bottom of the pipe (50-350ft deep). The pump piston is at the bottom and pushes the water up, making these hand pumps complex and expensive.
Here's a good description of how these deep well pumps work.
